Why accas pay so much

An acca multiplies every leg's odds together, and every leg has to win. Four favourites at 1.45, 1.70, 1.88 and 2.05 combine to 9.50, so a £5 acca returns £47.50. One draw anywhere and it's gone. The eight-fold in the table pays roughly 42/1 from legs that each look comfortable at 1.60.

The bookmaker's margin multiplies too. A 5% margin on each of four legs works out at roughly 21.6% on the acca. The prices above put that four-fold's chance at 10.5%, and the true chance is lower still once the margin comes out.

Building a better acca

  • •Fewer, stronger legs. Every extra leg adds margin. Three legs you rate beat eight you're hoping about.
  • •Check the ELO gap. A short price with only a small ratings gap between the sides is exactly where accas die.
  • •Know when to stop. Past five or six legs the margin stacks up so fast you're mostly buying a lottery ticket. Fun, but price it honestly.
  • •Each-way accas. The place part multiplies each leg's place odds, so it can still pay when your picks only place.
  • •Follow it live. Track every leg on the live scores and you'll know early whether the last one needs hedging.
