One price, four languages

The number you multiply your stake by to get everything back, stake included. £5 at 3.40 brings home £17. Exchanges and most betting apps default to it, and it makes the quick maths easy.

Profit on the left, stake on the right. 11/8 pays £11 for every £8 you risk, so a fiver wins £6.88 and you get the fiver back too. Still the language of the betting shop.

A minus sign shows what you stake to win 100; a plus sign shows what 100 wins. −125 means £125 to win £100, while +240 means £100 nets you £240.

One divided by the decimal price. 3.40 says 29.4%. That figure has the bookmaker's margin baked in, so set it against your own read of the game.

Reading a live price

The in-play market flashes up 4/9. Run it through and you get 1.44 decimal, −225 American and a 69.2% implied chance. If the match stats show they've been battered on possession and shots on target, 69% looks generous. If they've bossed it and their ELO rating had them clear favourites before kick-off, it's about right. The converter gives you the number. The live data tells you whether to trust it.

Two habits worth building

  • •Think in percentages. A drift from 1.80 to 2.10 sounds small. In chance terms it's 55.6% down to 47.6%, and that's a serious swing in what the market believes.
  • •Compare in decimal. Fractions snap to tidy numbers, so a 4.40 elsewhere shows up as the awkward 17/5. Line every price up in decimal and the best one jumps out.
