Two halves of one bet

An each-way bet is a win bet and a place bet at the same stake, so £8 each way costs £16. The place half pays a fraction of the win odds (1/4, 1/5 and so on) if your pick finishes inside the paid places. In football you'll find it on outright and top-scorer markets as well as on racing and golf.

Place odds = 1 + (decimal odds − 1) × place fraction

The break-even rule

The place half covers your whole outlay once the place odds reach 2.0. At 1/4 terms that happens from 4/1 upwards; at 1/5 terms you need 5/1 or bigger. Anything shorter and a placed finish still loses you money.

That's the each-way sweet spot: double-figure prices, where a place on its own shows a profit and a win pays handsomely.

Calls worth making

  • •Short price? Win only. At 9/2 with 1/5 terms the place half can't cover your stake. Put the whole lot on the win.
  • •Extra places beat a bigger price. When one bookmaker pays an extra place, that usually adds more value than a slightly longer win price.
  • •Check the stake. The figure you enter is per part. The calculator doubles it for the total outlay.
