Spotting a genuine arb

Take the best price for every outcome in one market, even if each comes from a different bookmaker. Add up 1 ÷ each price. If the total is under 1, or under 100% as a book, a correctly split stake returns more than you put in whatever the result.

Over at 2.08 with one firm, under at 2.02 with another. That's 48.08% + 49.50% = 97.58%. Put £98.54 on the over and £101.46 on the under, £200 in total, and either side returns about £204.95. That's a 2.48% profit, and the scoreline is irrelevant.

Home 2.25, draw 3.55 and away 3.80 across three books totals 98.93%. With £300 the split is £134.78, £85.42 and £79.80, and every result returns around £303.25: a 1.08% edge.

Pick a staking plan

  • •Split. Level profit on every outcome. The default, and the purest arb.
  • •Fav Wins. The shortest price carries all the profit; the others just hand your money back.
  • •Fav Loses. The favourite only breaks even and the bigger prices carry the profit. Use it when the live stats make you doubt the favourite.
  • •Smooth. Rounds each stake to a tidy figure. £95 looks like a punter; £97.36 looks like a spreadsheet. You give up a few pence of the guarantee.

Where arbs go wrong

  • •They vanish fast. A goal or a team-news leak shuts an arb in seconds. Recheck every price right before you stake.
  • •Rules must match. Make sure each bookmaker settles the market the same way, whether that's 90 minutes only or how an abandoned match is treated.
  • •Limits shrink the lot. If one bookie caps your stake, the whole split has to scale down to fit.
